34.
Er Lee Bee Wah asked the Minister for Transport if he would provide an update on his Ministry's study on the feasibility of retrofitting overhead bridges in the immediate vicinity of MRT stations with lifts.
Mr Raymond Lim Siang Keat: We are committed towards a people-centred transport system, and have been rolling out improvements progressively on our public transport network and pedestrian facilities to make it safer and more convenient for the elderly and the less ambulant.
We have been studying ways to improve existing pedestrian overhead bridges for the less mobile segments of our population. This includes the possibility of retrofitting selected overhead bridges in the immediate vicinity of MRT stations with lifts. We have shared that this is a thorough study, covering not just the selection of bridges and technical feasibility, but also how the lifts will be operated and maintained once they are installed. As this is a significant undertaking, we are weighing this carefully against cost considerations and other available alternatives. We expect to complete the study by the end of first quarter 2011.
