DISABILITY AMONG YOUNGER SINGAPOREANS

6.

Ms Sylvia Lim asked the Minister for Community Development, Youth and Sports whether he will provide an estimate as to how many Singapore residents below 60 years old are disabled.

Dr Vivian Balakrishnan: Given that disability is a complex phenomenon, there is no single estimate of the number of disabled persons in Singapore below the age of 60. Instead, there are multiple estimates at different life stages that indicate the possible extent of disability in the population. Among young children aged six years and below, there are about 1,400-2,000 children a year who are diagnosed as having developmental delays. Among those of school-going age in mainstream and special education (SPED) schools, 2.5% have some disability. Among adults, the 2001 National Health Surveillance Survey by the Ministry of Health reported that 1.9% of respondents aged 18 and 59 years old had difficulty with self-care.
