"Mr Poh Ber Liak: To ask the Minister for Law and National Development whether and when the Government will (a) provide electricity to residents at the upper parts of Peng Ghee Road and Peng Ann Road and (b) repair Goh Hup Road off Tampines Road, 9¼ m.s."

Pursuant to Standing Order No. 20 (2), the Minister for Law and National Development supplied the following answers:-

  1. "Under the provisions of the Land Acquisition Ordinance whenever Government intends to acquire compulsorily any private land for a public purpose it must announce its intention and the public purpose for which such land is required by the publication of a notification or a declaration as the case may be, in the Government Gazette. In this case, Government would do likewise if it is intended to acquire the land referred to by the Member for Tampines.

Settlers on land acquired for public purposes are resettled or rehoused by the Housing and Development Board. The service of notice to remove, payment of ex-gratia payments and clearance all take place after the State has taken possession of the land under the Land Acquisition Ordinance.

The Government has not given any notice to the occupants to remove."

  1. "(a) The electrification of the upper parts of Peng Ghee Road and Peng Ann Road will be included in the next stage of the Electrification Programme for supplies to kampong areas. It is expected that electricity supplies will be made available to the residents in this area in 1966.

(b) The repair of Goh Hup Road has been approved by the Urban and Rural Services Committee and the work will be carried out in 1966."
