Mr Cheo Chai Chen asked the Minister for National Development whether the open field opposite Blk 602, Yishun Central/Yishun Street 61 is reserved for a branch library.
Dr Richard Hu Tsu Tau: The site opposite Block 602, Yishun Central/Yishun Street 61 has been safeguarded by HDB for institutional uses. The development of branch libraries is under the purview of the Ministry of Information and the Arts. MITA has informed me that the building of new branch libraries is being reviewed by the Library 2000 Review Committee formed in June 1992. The Committee is reviewing the role of the National Library and will recommend guidelines and models for the development of future branch libraries in due course. MITA will finalise the types of libraries to be built and their locations after studying the recommendations of the Library 2000 Review Committee.
