Dr Kanwaljit Soin asked the Minister for Health if he will explain the decreased attendance at family planning clinics of new and existing acceptors of family planning; and whether he will give an economic profile of the acceptors.
BG George Yong-Boon Yeo: Attendances at Government family planning clinics have dropped because with rising incomes, more women are obtaining their contraceptive supplies from the private sector. Secondly, over the years the condom has become the most popular method of contraception. As it is easily available in many retail outlets, couples do not need to obtain their supplies from family planning clinics.
Although attendances at Government family planning clinics have dropped, the contraceptive practice rate in Singapore has remained more or less constant at 65% in 1992 as compared to 67% in 1987.
As to the economic profile of acceptors at government family planning clinics, 11% have a combined family income of under $800, 43% between $800 and $1,500 and 46% above $1,500.
