Dr Kanwaljit Soin asked the Minister for Labour whether there are any restrictions on the type of work that foreign workers from different countries are allowed to do and whether work permit holders are only allowed to come from certain countries.
Dr Lee Boon Yang: Employers can recruit Work Permit holders from Malaysia as well as non-traditional sources (NTS), such as the Philippines, Thailand, India, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. In general, Malaysians are allowed to work in all sectors of the economy while NTS workers can work only in the construction sector, the marine industry and as domestic workers.
