Dr Kanwaljit Soin asked the Minister for Health if he will confirm that from 1970 to 1988, 1% increase in the Gross Domestic Product led to a 0.94% increase in health expenditure and what is the relative situation from 1989 to 1993.

BG George Yong-Boon Yeo: Between 1970 and 1988, nominal GDP grew by 12% per annum. National health expenditure increased at the rate of 11.4% a year for the same period. There are many factors contributing to the increase in health spending. It is incorrect to attribute the increase in health expenditure solely to GDP growth.

Between 1989 and 1993, nominal GDP and national health expenditure grew at the same rate of 11.9% per annum.
