TRAFFIC ACCIDENTS CAUSED BY SPEEDING

25.

Dr Lim Wee Kiak asked the Minister for Transport in the light of recent cases of traffic accidents caused by speeding (a) how many vehicles involved in speeding accidents in the past two years were found with illegal engine modifications; (b) how many workshops involved in doing such modifications have been prosecuted in the past two years.

Mr Raymond Lim Siang Keat: Accident investigation comes under the purview of the Traffic Police (TP). TP has advised that they do not specifically track the number of accidents caused by speeding where there are engine modifications.

Column: 1545

Notwithstanding this, the Land Transport Authority (LTA) takes a serious view of illegal modification of vehicles as it could adversely affect the vehicle’s safety and exhaust emission characteristics. LTA requires all vehicles to be sent for periodic inspections to ensure that they are roadworthy, and that they have not been illegally modified. Owners of vehicles that fail the inspection would be required to rectify the fault. LTA also conducts regular enforcement checks on the roads and carries out blitzes island-wide to detect such modified vehicles.

Over the last two years, no workshops have been prosecuted for being involved in illegal engine modifications.
