MATRIMONIAL SALE OF HDB FLATS

(Single Singapore Citizen Scheme): **
1.
Ms Irene Ng Phek Hoong asked the Minister for National Development (a) for each of the last five years, how many of the divorced women who have been affected by the matrimonial sale of HDB flats are below the age of 35; and (b) whether they are affected by the Single Singapore Citizen Scheme.
Mr Mah Bow Tan: For each of the past five years, there were on average 630 women below the age of 35 who sold their matrimonial HDB homes as a result of divorce.
A divorced person with legal custody of at least one child constitutes a family nucleus. Upon sale of the matrimonial flat, he or she has the option of buying a new or resale HDB flat according to his/her eligibility.
Divorced persons without custody of children are treated no differently from other singles. If they are 35 or older, they can purchase a resale HDB flat under the Single Singapore Citizen Scheme if they meet the eligibility criteria. They can also purchase a resale flat jointly with another single under the Joint Singles Scheme.
Divorced persons below 35 who are without custody of children are not eligible to purchase a HDB flat on their own. They can choose to stay with family for mutual care and support, or rent a room from the open market.
