WHEELCHAIR ACCESSIBLE BUS SERVICE

**

(Update on utilisation rate): **

20.

Dr Lam Pin Min asked the Minister for Transport if he can provide (i) an update on the utilisation rate of the wheelchair accessible bus (WAB) service by the physically handicapped and (ii) a progress update on the roll-out plan for the WAB service in Singapore.

Mr Raymond Lim Siang Keat: There are currently 11 bus service routes where wheelchair accessible buses (WABs) are deployed. In the selection of routes for WAB deployment, the public transport operator SBS Transit consults with Voluntary Welfare Organisations such as the Handicaps Welfare Association and the Society for the Physically Disabled. On average, there are about 70 wheelchair passengers per month per WAB service.

About 40% of the bus fleet will be wheelchair accessible by 2010.
