Ms Ellen Lee asked the Minister for Transport, for 2006, (a) what is the frequency of incidents similar to the recent incident where a lady commuter injured her leg whilst boarding an MRT train; (b) what is the number of claims for compensation by those injured; and (c) what is the number of claims that have been settled.

Mr Raymond Lim Siang Keat: In 2006, there were five incidents of commuters who had their legs caught in the platform gap while boarding the train.

Claims and compensation for such incidents are matters to be dealt with by the public transport operators. We understand from SMRT and SBST that they have not received any claims for compensation arising from these incidents, although the operators have borne the medical cost in some cases as a matter of goodwill.
