Mr Kenneth Tiong Boon Kiat asked the Minister for Education (a) in each of the last five years, what proportion of resigning teachers joined the Flexi-Adjunct Teaching Scheme within 12 months; (b) whether a Flexi-Adjunct Teacher may decline form teachership or co-curricular duties and remain engaged; (c) how duties exceeding the paid hours are treated; and (d) whether those who resigned and those on no-pay leave are engaged on the same terms.

Mr Desmond Lee: Over the past five years, around a quarter of teachers who resigned were engaged as Flexi-Adjunct Teachers (FAJTs) within a year of leaving the Education Service.

Every FAJT performs both teaching and non-teaching duties, which may include form teachership, co-curricular activity duties or other responsibilities in the school. FAJTs are paid hourly for the work performed and their working hours are subject to a cap. Schools are guided to ensure that the duties assigned to FAJTs are within the paid hours.

Education Officers who are on no-pay leave or resign to join the FAJT scheme are engaged on the same terms.
