Ms Hany Soh asked the Minister for National Development (a) whether HDB will consider including the installation of external retractable clothes drying racks for executive maisonette under the Home Improvement Programme (HIP), to enhance safety and convenience especially for senior residents; and (b) if not, what are the reasons militating against doing so.

Mr Chee Hong Tat: Under the Home Improvement Programme (HIP), external pipe sockets are replaced with external retractable clothes drying racks (ER-CDRs). This is because the use of bamboo poles in the pipe sockets poses a safety risk. Some flats, including executive maisonettes, were designed with other spaces for residents to dry their clothes and have no pipe sockets. Hence, there is no need to replace any pipe sockets with ER-CDRs under HIP for such flats.
