Ms Gho Sze Kee asked the Minister for Education whether the Ministry will consider requiring secondary schools to clearly signpost in advance the academic criteria for students to progress to a more demanding subject level, and allowing students who meet those criteria to progress automatically instead of leaving the final decision to the discretion of individual schools.

Mr Desmond Lee: We refer to the reply to a similar Parliamentary Question issued on 5 August 2026. [Please refer to "Criteria for Students Offered Progression from G1 to G2 and G2 to G3 under Full Subject-Based Banding", Official Report, 5 August 2026, Vol 96, Issue 34, Written Answers to Questions for Oral Answer not Answered by End of Question Time section.]

There are no plans to require secondary schools to provide the academic criteria for students to automatically progress to a more demanding level, as schools consider many factors including each student's interests, aptitude and ability to manage the overall curricular load.
