Mr Ong Chang Sam asked the Minister for Education how many Nanyang University Second-Batch Graduates were teaching in Government Secondary and Government-Aided Secondary Schools as at 30th June, 1961, and 31St December, 1961; how many of them were employed as permanent teachers; how many of them are still employed as temporary teachers; and how many of them had had their service terminated and the reasons therefor.
Mr Yong Nyuk Lin: The number of second-batch graduates of Nanyang University who were teaching in schools: As at 30th June, 1961: In Government schools 28 In Aided schools 73 ----- 101 ----- As at 31st December, 1961: In Government schools 26 In Aided schools 70 ----- 96 -----
All appointments to posts of untrained Pass graduate teachers are temporary until the graduate obtains his professional qualifications. Therefore, to the question, "how many of the second-hatch of Nanyang University Graduates were employed as permanent teachers", the answer is "None" as all are employed as temporary teachers.
Between June and December 1961, seven teachers had resigned. Only one had had his service terminated for two reasons: firstly, for failing to appear before the Public Service Commission for interview although he submitted his application, and the second reason is for inefficiency.
Mr Ong Chang Sam: (In Mandarin): May I ask the Minister whether all the teachers are in the Teachers' Training College?
Mr Yong Nyuk Lin: Actually I require notice of that question, Sir. But I can say that most of the second batch of Nanyang University graduates have been undergoing training at the Teachers' Training College since August last year.
