Mr Teong Eng Siong asked the Minister for Law and National Development when will the reconstruction and metalling of Wei Hua Road in the Sembawang Constituency be carried out.
The Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for National Development (Mr Ho Cheng Choon) (for the Minister for Law and National Development): Mr Speaker, Sir, plans for reconstruction and metalling of Wei Hua Road are ready. Tenders are being called and work will commence in early January 1967.
Mr Teong Eng Siong (Sembawang): (In Mandarin): I would like to ask the Parliamentary Secretary this question. If the work was approved in April this year, why can it only start from next year?
Mr Ho Cheng Choon: Mr Speaker, Sir, the Urban and Rural Services Committee approved the repairing and metalling of Wei Hua Road on the 4th of July, 1966, and not April as mentioned by the hon. Member for Sembawang.
In my capacity as Chairman of the Committee, I issued a circular to all Government Members of Parliament on the 1st July, 1964, requesting them that if any project approved by the Committee was not carried out within three months, they must bring the matter to my attention. And the hon. Member for Sembawang has never brought this particular road to my attention, and I think he should bear part of the blame.
