Mr S. V. Lingam asked the Minister for Law and National Development if he has requested the Housing and Development Board to furnish him with full information on (a) alleged malpractices in building construction carried out for the Board, (b) investigations into such allegations, and (c) disciplinary or other action taken against employees of the Board and others as a result of the investigations; what the information furnished to him is and whether he is satisfied with the progress of investigations and action taken in the matter.
Mr Barker: Mr Speaker, Sir, the Corrupt Practices Investigation Bureau is at present conducting investigations into certain alleged malpractices in building construction carried out by the Housing and Development Board. No disciplinary or other action has as yet been taken because the investigations are not complete.
I am satisfied with the progress of the investigations which are being carried out very thoroughly, but have been impeded by certain natural obstacles. At this stage, it would not be appropriate for me to say what information or evidence has so far been obtained because the investigations may be prejudiced.
However, Mr Speaker, Sir, I expect to be able soon to make a fuller statement on the matter when the investigations are completed.
Mr Tang See Chim rose -
Mr Speaker: As the Minister has said that the investigations may be prejudiced, it may be premature to frame a supplementary. But in any case, can we have your supplementary?
Mr Tang See Chim: In that case, I do not think I shall ask it.
