Mr Ng Kah Ting asked the Minister for Education whether he will give the breakdown figures of the number of children registered for Primary One Classes in 1968 in the four language streams; and whether all will be given places in the school of their parents' choice.
Mr Ong Pang Boon: The breakdown figures are as follows: - No. of children Language stream registered (i) Malay 3,043 (ii) Chinese 18,883 (iii) Tamil 95 (iv) English 34,765 ------ Total 56,736 ======
Places will be available for all children who are eligible for admission to Primary One classes in 1968. About 52,000 children or 92 per cent of children registered will be admitted to schools of their parent's choice. It is not possible for every child to be accommodated in the school of his or her parent's choice because some parents have registered their children in schools in which all places have already been taken up at the time they applied for their children. However, these children will be posted to schools which have vacancies near their homes.
