Mr Tay Boon Too asked the Minister of State (Prime Minister's Department) whether Government will consider reducing the annual road tax for tricycles, used for carrying goods, from $43 to $20 the minimum annual tax for motor cycles.

The Minister of State for the Prime Minister's Department (Tuan Haji Yaacob Bin Mohamed): (In Malay): Mr Speaker, Sir, vehicles which carry goods, whether they be tricycles or motor-cars, are licensed separately from vehicles which are not employed for such purposes. The suggestion by the Member for Paya Lebar, if it is considered at all, must be examined from this point of view.

Mr Tay Boon Too: (In Mandarin): Sir, is the Minister of State aware that a tricycle for carrying goods costs only slightly more than a hundred dollars, but every year its owner has to pay about $43 for road tax?

Tuan Haji Yaacob: (In Malay): Sir, I have stated earlier that if at all the suggestion is to be considered, it will be examined from the point of view of the use of the vehicle. I would like to suggest to those who use tricycles, to Use motorised tricycles for convenience.
