The Leader of the House (Mr E. W. Barker): Mr Speaker, Sir, the death of Mr N. Govindasamy is a sad start to our proceedings in this Session. The late Mr Govindasamy had not been well for more than a year and Members are aware of that fact. He could have retired last December but he chose to continue to serve his constituents, the Party and the trade unions. He was re-elected with a thumping majority last December. He was sworn in only last Monday and looked forward so much to taking part in our forthcoming debate. What a pity it is that he died this morning in the prime of his life.
Mr Govindasamy was for long a staunch supporter of the workers and he was their fiery champion in this House. They will miss him and so will we. But knowing Mr Govindasamy. I think he would not want us to adjourn for his sake. The funeral will be held later this afternoon, and those Members who are not due to speak today can attend the funeral.
May I place on record, Sir, the deep sympathy of Members of this House for his loss. We send our condolences to his bereaved widow and four children.
2.33 p.m.
Mr Speaker: As a mark of respect to the late hon. Member, I propose that the House observe a two-minute silence.
The House rose and paid respect.
