Mr Teo Chong Tee asked the Minister for Law and the Environment whether a market will be built within the Somapah Road/Upper Changi Road area in the near future as all the licensed hawkers currently in the open-air market at Somapah Road/Upper Changi Road will be resited soon at the new markets in Bedok New Town Neighbourhoods 2 and 3.
The Minister for Law and the Environment (Mr E.W. Barker): Mr Speaker, Sir, there is no plan to build a market in the Somapah Road/Upper Changi Road area in the near future. There are three markets at Bedok New Town and a private market in Bedok Road to cater for the needs of the residents within Somapah Road/Upper Changi Road area.
Sir, this area has been undergoing active redevelopment. At present, part of Somapah Road is affected by a road project and a large area has been acquired for the development of a Singapore Bus Service depot. Many of the residents have been resettled at Bedok New Town.
