Mr Ch'ng Jit Koon asked the Minister for the Environment, as the portion of Tiong Bahru Road between Tiong Poh Road and Seng Poh Road is usually flooded during heavy rain to the extent that the water has gone into the shophouses there, whether his Ministry is planning to take remedial measures of a permanent nature to relieve the persons affected.
Mr Lim Kim San: Mr Speaker, Sir, flooding affects a row of six pre-war shophouses in that area. The ground level of these shops is 0.3 metre lower than the road level. The drain fronting these houses has been found to be too small and during a heavy rain, especially if it coincides with high tide, the water overflows and floods these shophouses. The PWD has been asked to look into it, and the drains will be widened soon.
