Dr Lee Chiaw Meng asked the Minister for National Development whether there is any proposal to re-develop the old Singapore Improvement Trust housing estate on both sides of Norfolk Road, and, if so, whether he will consider increasing the number of storeys of flats to be built in order to maximise the use of this prime piece of land.

Mr Teh Cheang Wan: Mr Speaker, Sir, about 16 blocks of the existing Norfolk Estate will be affected by the widening of Norfolk Road into part of the Central Expressway and will have to be demolished. The project is scheduled to be implemented in 1982.

The HDB will study the redevelopment of the remaining parts of Norfolk Estate after the completion of the road widening project in 1984.
