The Minister for Law (Mr E.W. Barker): Mr Deputy Speaker, Sir, I beg to move the Motion* standing in my name as it appears on the Order Paper.

*The motion reads as follows:

That, pursuant to clause (3) of Article 42 of the Constitution of the Republic of Singapore, the allowance of the Deputy Speaker shall be $1,000 per month with effect from 1st April, 1981.

Sir, clause (3) of Article 42 of the Constitution provides, inter alia, that the Deputy Speaker shall be paid such salary or allowance as Parliament may from time to time determine. The allowance of the Deputy Speaker has remained unchanged at $500 per month since 1959, i.e. 21 years ago. With the revision of the consolidated salaries of the Chief Justice, the Ministers and the Speaker, the opportunity is also taken to revise the allowance of the Deputy Speaker. It is proposed to revise the allowance of the Deputy Speaker from $500 per month to $1,000 per month with effect from 1st April 1981.

Sir, I beg to move.

Question put, and agreed to.

Resolved,

That, pursuant to clause (3) of Article 42 of the Constitution of the Republic of Singapore, the allowance of the Deputy Speaker shall be $1,000 per month with effect from 1st April, 1981.
