Mr Sia Khoon Seong asked the First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Education when the next promotion exercise for Education Officers will be held.

Dr Tay Eng Soon (for the First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Education): Mr Speaker, Sir, no date has been fixed for a general promotion exercise for principals and teachers. It is unlikely that one will be held as previous exercises have merely resulted in a general demoralisation of the teaching service.

The Ministry, together with the Public Service Commission and the Finance Ministry, is working on a better method of rewarding deserving principals and teachers.
