Encik Abbas Abu Amin asked the Minister for Education (a) if he will indicate (i) the enrolment patterns of Pasir Panjang Secondary School and Labrador Primary School and (ii) the breakdowns of ethnic groups attending these schools for the years 1984, 1985, 1986 and 1987; and (b) whether there are plans to renovate and improve the facilities in these two schools.
The Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Education (Mr Tang Guan Seng)(for the Minister for Education): Mr Speaker, Sir, I am answering on behalf of my Minister.
Sir, I will be forwarding the tables on the enrolment patterns for Pasir Panjang Secondary and Labrador Primary Schools by year and ethnic group to the Member for Pasir Panjang.
The overall enrolments in both schools have been declining. Our plan is to phase out Labrador Primary School and transfer the remaining 172 pupils to Jagoh Primary School in January 1989. If the enrolment for Pasir Panjang Secondary School continues to decline, plans will be made to close the school in the next 1-2 years.
In view of the impending development, there is no necessity to renovate these two schools.
