A clean environment is essential to a high quality of life. The Ministry will continue to protect and improve the environment. It will build more public health and environmental infrastructure such as sewerage, drainage and solid waste disposal facilities.

More than 96% of the population have modern sanitation. The Ministry will extend sewers to the remaining premises, and expand sewage treatment capacity to meet the needs of a growing population.

We will undertake more drainage projects as new areas are developed. The Bukit Timah Flood Alleviation Phase IIA Project will be completed in 1990. Our rivers and waterways will be kept clean.

A third incineration plant at Senoko will be completed in 1992.

To prevent illegal dumping, the Ministry will license private waste collectors to collect and dispose of solid wastes.

With all street hawkers completely resited, the Ministry is reviewing its plans for markets and food centres. It will privatize management of these facilities gradually, and raise the standard of hygiene and cleanliness in all food outlets.

The Ministry will work with the Registry of Vehicles for better control of emission from vehicles, in particular black smoke from diesel vehicles.

We will educate Singaporeans in their social responsibilities for public health and the environment.
