MR MAH BOW TAN Minister for the Environment

The Ministry of the Environment will implement the Green Plan to develop Singapore into a model green city. We will step up public education to make Singaporeans more environmentally aware and responsible. Singaporeans can then enjoy a cleaner environment.

  1. We will begin selling hawker stalls to incumbent stallholders this year. This is part of the overall plan to help Singaporeans to own assets and take a stake in the country.

  2. We will continue to improve our infrastructure and services:-

a. An offshore sanitary landfill will be constructed to replace the rapidly diminishing site at Lorong Halus.

b. The open treatment tanks at the Kranji Sewage Treatment Works will be covered up by next year. Other treatment works will be similarly upgraded to reduce the odour nuisance and to free land around the works for higher value developments.

c. The walls of the Singapore River will be rebuilt. This will make the river more attractive and allow for more recreational uses. The river will also be deepened to increase its drainage capacity.

d. We will mechanise street cleansing further, and explore less labour intensive ways to collect refuse.

  1. We will continue stringent enforcement against mosquito breeding and educate the public on measures to curb the incidence of Dengue Haemorrhagic Fever.

  2. We will implement control measures to keep noise at acceptable levels through proper land use, technological, engineering and other practicable means.

  3. We will strengthen co-operation with our neighbours in environmental protection and management.
