Mr Ling How Doong asked the Minister for Community Development, of the 1,380 residents in welfare homes for destitute and aged persons in 1993, how many of them were in homes run by voluntary and religious organisations; and whether their stay was free of charge.
The Acting Minister for Community Development (Mr Abdullah Tarmugi): Mr Speaker, Sir, the Member for Bukit Gombak may have obtained the figure of 1,380 destitute and aged persons from the FY 1994-95 Budget Book. This is only an estimate of the number of destitute persons likely to reside in the three welfare homes administered by my Ministry in FY 93/94.
As at 28th February this year, there were actually 1,341 destitute persons living in the three Government homes, ie, Woodlands Home for the Aged, Woody Lodge and the Pelangi Home, and all of them stay in these homes for free.
