Dr Kanwaljit Soin asked the Acting Minister for Community Development whether he has information on the number of disabled people confined to wheelchairs and, if not, whether he will recommend that this information be included in the next census.
Mr Abdullah Tarmugi: The two main voluntary welfare organisations (VWOs) serving the disabled, namely, the Handicaps Welfare Association and the Society for Aid to the Paralysed, have on their register a total of 495 wheelchair bound disabled persons. There is a double counting of 98 persons who are registered in both societies. The Cheshire Home has 95 wheelchair bound disabled persons.
As we already have information on disabled persons who are wheelchair bound, there is no need to include such information in the Population Census.
