Dr Kanwaljit Soin asked the Acting Minister for Community Development why the number of recipients for Public Assistance has gone down from 3,241 in 1983 to 2,220 in 1993.
Mr Abdullah Tarmugi: The decrease in the number of PA cases was due mainly to two reasons. One was the decline in the number of single destitute persons. The other was the deletion from the Scheme of 600 cases between 1991 and 1993 as they were residing in institutions assisted under the Government Financial Assistance Scheme for Voluntary Welfare Organisations and did not require the allowance for their upkeep in such institutions.
