Mdm Claire Chiang See Ngoh asked the Minister for Community Development what plans are in the pipeline to broaden the criteria for obtaining funding in our social security system to strengthen the capacity of disadvantaged families and individuals to cope with the economic downturn as well as the needs of Singaporeans in the 21st century.
Mr Abdullah Tarmugi: The Government has a wide range of schemes to help disadvantaged families and individuals in times of distress. A list is annexed (see Annex III (Cols. 747-752)). The criteria for eligibility to qualify for the various schemes are reviewed as the need arises. Families or individuals who face financial hardship because of the current economic downturn can approach MCD or the various organisations administering these schemes for assistance. MCD will ensure that genuine cases will receive financial assistance to help them tied over this difficult period. ANNEX III - ASSISTANCE TO PEOPLE WITH FINANCIAL DIFFICULTIES (Cols. 747-752)
The CDC launched a National Helpline in January 1998 to enable residents to call for assistance. Residents need only remember one number to gain access to various services. The Helpline is published through a brochure issued by the CDC. Those who need help can also approach the nearest CDC counter for assistance.
