Dr Toh See Kiat asked the Minister for Communications (a) whether there were any problems when Changi International Airport first opened; and (b) what numbers of luggage, if any, were lost on the first day of operation at the Airport.

Mr Mah Bow Tan: Changi Airport commenced operations on 1st July 1981. Airport operation was smooth except for a problem with the Flight Information Display System (FIDS). A manual back-up arrangement was activated, airport staff were deployed to assist passengers and overall airport operation was not affected.

Our records show that Changi Airport served 19,000 passengers and handled 29,000 pieces of baggage on its first day of operation. There was no problem with lost baggage. We received no complaints from airlines or passengers. Neither were there any media reports about lost baggage, although the opening of Changi Airport attracted a lot of media attention.
