Mrs Yu-Foo Yee Shoon asked the Minister for Community Development, with the worsening economic situation, more students currently attending classes in private tuition centres will be looking for cheaper alternatives to help them in their education, whether there are plans among self-help groups such as SINDA, CDAC and MENDAKI to absorb these students.

Mr Abdullah Tarmugi: I share Mrs Yu-Foo's concern that students affected by the economic situation should have the necessary help if they need tuition. The Ministry has checked with each self-help group. The self-help groups have assured the Ministry that they will have places for students who qualify for and require subsidised tuition. They are prepared to open up more classes and to waive fees for deserving cases if necessary.

We must continue to have a strong support system to ensure that our children's education is not affected by Singapore's economic situation. MCD and the self-help groups will ensure that subsidised tuition is available to those who need it.
