Mr Harun A. Ghani asked the Minister for the Environment how many hawker stallholders and restaurant owners were suspended from their businesses in 1997 and 1998; and how many of them were repeat offenders.
Mr Yeo Cheow Tong: Sir, in 1997, my Ministry suspended the licences of 10 hawker stallholders, 37 restaurant owners and 2 stallholders in coffeeshops. In 1998, the corresponding numbers were 22, 31 and 22 respectively. There was only one licensee, a hawker stallholder, who was suspended twice. The first suspension was for two weeks and the second for four weeks.
