Dr Jennifer Lee asked the Minister for Finance (i) whether further tax rebates, which are given to a working mother in the year of the birth of her third or fourth child and which may be used up to a period of 9 years, will be subsequently withdrawn if her marriage is dissolved by divorce, and if so (ii) what is the rationale for this.
Dr Richard Hu Tsu Tau: If the marriage is dissolved, the unused Further Tax Rebate (FTR) will cease. The procreation tax rebates were implemented to encourage married couples to have larger and complete families. Hence divorcees are not eligible for the FTR.
