LENGTH OF NATIONAL SERVICE

[Mr Speaker in the Chair]

Mdm Claire Chiang See Ngoh asked the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Defence whether the length of national service will be extended from two and a half to three years.

The Minister of State for Defence (Mr David T. E. Lim) (for the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Defence): Mr Speaker, Sir, MINDEF has no plans to change the period of national service.

Mdm Claire Chiang See Ngoh (Nominated Member): Would the Minister then make a public statement in the press to allay all the rumours that are going around on this matter, please?

Mr David Lim: Mr Speaker, Sir, by asking the question, Mdm Chiang has given us the opportunity to allay this rumour.
