The following Question stood in the name of Miss Penny Low -
Miss Penny Low: To ask the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance whether the income tax rebates given to parents for procreation can be extended to offset other types of taxes like property tax and vehicle tax, as many do not pay income tax and hence will not be able to benefit from the procreation tax rebate scheme.
Dr Tan Boon Wan (Ang Mo Kio): Question 5, Sir.
Mr Lee Hsien Loong: Mr Speaker, Sir, the Government grants income tax rebates for procreation to encourage working parents who pay income tax to have more children.
The income tax rebate is not meant to be a general tax rebate or a grant which a parent may use to offset other taxes.
