Mr Speaker: Hon. Members, we are now at the end of the Budget debate. It is the custom for the Speaker to say a few words after every session of the Committee of Supply.
There are several theories to explain why this is so. One of which is to compensate the Speaker for having to listen to Members' speeches for several days on end. But I relish the opportunity, really, to address the House, because it gives me the opportunity to thank hon. Members for their contributions in the debate, especially those Members who have given me their cooperation and understanding.
To those Members, whom I have had the occasion to cut their speeches unceremoniously, I offer my deepest apologies. If I seem unduly harsh in my interventions, it was because of the demands of my role as Speaker of the House, not due to my nature, as I am known to be humble, soft-spoken, gentle and caring.
Sir, I started this Debate with a mental list of MPs known for their long speeches. Alas, and to my dismay, not only does this list remain, I also have had to add new names to the number that I have. Henceforth, one of my missions in life now is to shorten this list as this session progresses.
Still, I have actually enjoyed the debate, despite my demeanour and my body language. I am impressed with the depth, breadth and texture of the speeches, and by the variety of views expressed. I would like to particularly congratulate the new Members of this House for their sterling performance in this debate. All these augur well for the future of this Parliament.
Hon. Members, we have had a long and very gruelling session. It leaves me now to end this debate. But before I do, I would like, and on behalf of my Deputy Speakers, and my staff on this side of the Chamber, to thank hon. Members once again for their contributions, their cooperation and their forbearance. My thanks also to the Leader of the House, and his Deputy and to the Whip and his Deputies, for their assistance. Thank you. [Applause.]
