CHINA UNDERGRADUATES' MONTHLY STIPEND

20.

Mr Steve Chia Kiah Hong asked the Acting Minister for Education if he will give the rationale for the Government to provide undergraduates from China studying in National University of Singapore a monthly stipend of S$500 without any bonds and strings attached.

Mr Tharman Shanmugaratnam: The undergraduates from China studying at the National University of Singapore are either self-financed or recipients of some form of sponsorship/financial assistance from NUS or other organisations. The scholarship terms and conditions vary from one organisation to another.

Some of the undergraduates from China are here on MOE's teaching scholarships. They are given a monthly stipend of $500. Upon graduation, these scholars have to serve a 6-year bond to teach in our schools.
