TRAINING PROGRAMMES

5.

Ms Braema Mathiaparanam asked the Minister for Manpower, in the last year, what is the number of women and men in the age groups of 40 to 49, 50 to 59, 60 to 69, who have undergone re-training to make them more employable for the job market.

Dr Ng Eng Hen: The Singapore Workforce Development Agency (WDA) captures trainee data for those above or below 40 years of age, but not by detailed breakdown into age bands. Gender breakdown is available but only for some programmes.

36% of 637,000 overall training places that WDA supported in 2003 were for workers aged 40 and above. Specific programmes like the Skills Redevelopment Programme (SRP), which re-skills lower-skilled workers, supported the training of 46,155 workers of which 17,980 or 39% were aged 40 years and above. Similarly in 2003, 41% of the participants in WDA's Place and Train Programmes where workers are trained for jobs found were aged 40 and above.
