FOG LIGHTS ON VEHICLES
**
(Policy): **
25.
Mr Arthur Fong asked the Minister for Transport (a) what is the policy on the use of fog lights fitted at the rear of some passenger vehicles; and (b) are the authorities concerned that the improper use of fog lights in clear weather results in distracting the motorists following behind, causing them to misjudge their braking distances or to brake unnecessarily.
Mr Yeo Cheow Tong: The Land Transport Authority (LTA) allows the installation of fog lamps on vehicles so long as such lamps comply with the requisite safety standards. The front fog lamps improve the illumination of the road in front of the vehicle while the rear fog lamps make the vehicle more readily visible from the rear when visibility is poor. Hence, such lamps should only be used during adverse weather conditions which result in reduced visibility, such as during heavy downpour and in hazy conditions.
The LTA agrees that the indiscriminate use of rear fog lamps may cause confusion to other motorists following behind. LTA's enforcement officers have been advising motorists on the proper use of fog lamps. The LTA will continue to educate motorists on the proper use of fog lamps and take more stringent enforcement action if necessary.
