SPORTS COMPLEX AT PASIR RIS DRIVE

29.

Dr Ahmad Mohd Magad asked the Minister for Community Development, Youth and Sports when will the planned sports complex in Pasir Ris Estate be built.

Dr Vivian Balakrishnan: I am pleased to inform Dr Ahmad that the construction of the Pasir Ris Sports Complex is currently scheduled to start in the second half of 2006 or early 2007, and it is expected to open to the public in 2009 or 2010, depending on the exact site that is chosen. My Ministry is currently in discussion with URA regarding the site.

In addition to the Pasir Ris Sports Complex, my Ministry has also approved the construction of another Sports Complex in Bukit Panjang. It will be located along Petir Road. Works for the Bukit Panjang Sports Complex are expected to start in late 2006, and the facilities are expected to be opened in the first half of 2009.

Each Sports Complex will have a Sports Hall, a Tennis Centre, as well as a swimming complex comprising a competition pool and a wading pool. We have plans to involve the private sector in designing and possibly managing the sports complexes, so as to introduce innovative operating concepts and programmes to draw in the crowds.

With a comprehensive suite of sports facilities under one roof, residents can look forward to having a 'one-stop' sports experience in a convenient location.
