USAGE OF SEGWAY GREEN VEHICLES ON SINGAPORE ROADS
60.
Mrs Mildred Tan asked the Minister for Transport given the use of Segways on roads in Europe, whether the Ministry will consider allowing such green vehicles to be used outside Sentosa and private roads.
Mr Raymond Lim Siang Keat: The treatment of the Segway Personal Transporters (SPTs) in different jurisdictions differs. Some allow SPTs to be used on roads with certain restrictions and conditions, while others restrict the use of SPTs to footways. This is to help minimise risks of accidents to the SPT users and other road users.
This is all the more so in a highly urbanised city like Singapore where accident statistics show that vulnerable road users account for up to 80% of accidents which result in fatalities and serious injuries. It is because of this safety consideration that we have not permitted SPTs onto our public roads.
