DEFENCE COOPERATION BETWEEN SINGAPORE AND NEW ZEALAND: * * *

5.

Ms Ellen Lee asked the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Defence how the recently-signed Arrangement between Singapore and New Zealand Concerning Defence Cooperation can improve the capability of the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) and boost ties between the New Zealand Armed Forces and SAF.

Mr Teo Chee Hean: The Arrangement between Singapore and New Zealand Concerning Defence Cooperation reaffirms the close and longstanding bilateral defence relationship, which is based on shared strategic perspectives and common security interests. The two armed forces have been cooperating closely in several areas, including the current multinational reconstruction efforts in Bamiyan Province, Afghanistan, and also interact regularly as members of the Five Power Defence Arrangements. New Zealand also provides training access to the Singapore Armed Forces, which we are grateful for.

The Arrangement also serves as a framework to expand and deepen the existing defence links between Singapore and New Zealand, in areas such as policy dialogues, military cooperation, operations and training. These interactions and cooperation help to enhance the SAF’s capabilities and professionalism, as well as to strengthen the interoperability and people-to-people links between both armed forces.
