30.

Mr Lim Biow Chuan asked the Minister for the Environment and Water Resources how many stalls are vacant and available for rental in all the markets/food centres in Singapore.

Assoc. Prof. Dr Yaacob Ibrahim: Vacant stalls in markets and hawker centres managed by the National Environment Agency are offered for rent to the general public on a monthly basis. The application is either by tender or by direct application under the Walk-in Scheme. There are currently (as at 1st October 2008) a total of 341 vacant stalls that are available for rental, which is about 2% of the total number of stalls in markets and hawker centres.
