Dr Lim Wee Kiak asked the Minister for Transport (a) if he can provide a breakdown of the growth of vehicular ownership in the North East and North West region of Singapore over the past five years compared to the overall vehicular growth; and (b) what was the rate of growth of roads in the different regions of Singapore during the past five years.
Mr Raymond Lim Siang Keat: Vehicle ownership in the North East (comprising Ang Mo Kio, Serangoon, Hougang, Sengkang, Punggol and Seletar) and North West (comprising Choa Chu Kang, Bukit Panjang, Bukit Batok and Tengah) regions of Singapore both have grown by 23% since 2001, consistent with the development of HDB estates in the two regions. The overall vehicular growth was 16% in the same period.
Since 2001, 204 and 51 lane-km have been added to the North East and North West regions respectively. The rates of growth of roads in these two regions were 26% and 15% respectively, as compared to 8% for the whole of Singapore in the same period.
