The Minister for Local Government, Lands and Housing (Inche Abdul Hamid Bin Haji Jumat): Mr Speaker, Sir, I beg to move the motion standing in my name, namely,

That this Assembly, in accordance with section 4 of the Foreshores Ordinance (Chapter 246), approves the reclamation by Messrs. John I. Thornycroft and Company Limited as agents of the Government, at the expense of the said Messrs. John I. Thorny-croft and Company Limited and subject to an indemnity to be previously given by the said Messrs. John I. Thornycroft and Company Limited to the Government against all claims in any manner arising out of or in connection with such reclamation or the work thereof, and subject to such other conditions as the Governor may impose, of that portion of the foreshore and sea-bed containing an area of approximately 20,000 square feet adjoining Lot 571-1, Mukim XXV, at Tanjong Rhu as delineated on plans which have been approved by the Director of Public Works and are deposited at the Land Office, Singapore.

This motion is the result of an application by Messrs. John I. Thornycroft and Company Limited for permission to reclaim part of the foreshore and sea-bed adjacent to and north of their shipyard at Tanjong Rhu. The company proposes to construct a slipway and sea-wall on the seaward side of this reclamation. Under section 4 of the Foreshores Ordinance, no reclamation can be made of the foreshore or sea-bed without the sanction of this Assembly. The object of this motion is to give the requisite authority.

The lessee will act as agents for the Government in making the reclamation, and the usual indemnity will be taken. When the reclamation is complete, the land will become Crown land and a lease will be issued to the company. Sir, I beg to move.

Mr Chew Swee Kee: I second it.

Question put, and agreed to.

Resolved,

That this Assembly, in accordance with section 4 of the Foreshores Ordinance (Chapter 246), approves the reclamation by Messrs. John I. Thornycroft and Company Limited as agents of the Government, at the expense of the said Messrs. John I.
