Mr R. Jumabhoy asked the Financial Secretary how many persons had assessable incomes of (i) $30,000 to $40,000, and (ii) $40,000 to $50,000 per year in each of the years from 1955 to 1957; and whether the incomes of such persons were derived without keeping any establishment for earning them.
Mr Oon Khye Kiang: It is regretted that the information required is not available in the precise form in which it is sought. It would involve considerable expense of time and labour to go through the records to obtain such information. However, in respect of the period in question, the following number of taxpayers had assessable incomes between $30,000 and $50,000 per year:- Year of Assessment Taxpayers 1955 763 1956 916 1957 865
The information relating to the years of assessment 1955 and 1956 covers assessments issued up to the end of the year following the year of assessment, but that for the year of assessment 1957 covers assessments issued up to 31st March, 1958 only.
It is assumed that the second part of the question refers to income of taxpayers, which was derived solely from rents, dividends, etc, and who did not carry on any employment, trade or profession in Singapore. Such information is not available and it is not possible to furnish it without having to go through the records of each individual taxpayer.
