Dr Toh Chin Chye: Mr Speaker, before I move the motion for the adjournment, may I, on behalf of the House, express our appreciation to you and members of the staff for your patience and endurance in keeping up with this House during these six weeks' of sitting? We wish you and your staff a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
An hon. Member: Hear, hear!
Dr Toh Chin Chye: And I for my own self wish all present goodwill to all men.
Dr Lee Siew Choh: May we in the Barisan Sosialis also associate ourselves with the sentiments expressed by the Leader of the House? We wish you as well as Members of the House here a Merry Christmas.
Tun Lim Yew Hock: May I also say, Sir, how greatly we appreciate your patience and the hard work put in by the staff? We would like to wish you all a very, very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
Mr Ong Eng Guan: I think, Mr Speaker, Sir, when the Leader of the House said what he said, he was expressing the sentiments on behalf of all Members of this House. And when he said it, it was on a non-party basis.
Mr David Marshall: May the blessed spirit of Christmas bring all of us together on one issue. I am delighted to join the other Party leaders and the Government in expressing not only appreciation of the work during the arduous weeks but in wishing you and your staff a very Happy New Year and a Merry Christmas to everybody.
Mr Speaker: I thought that possibly I should rule all these speeches out of order! But may I, especially on behalf of the Assembly staff, thank you, leaders of all Parties, for your very kind words and appreciation of what they have done for the Assembly. I myself, I am sure, have proved to be a bit impatient at times, but I think, with the goodwill of the season - the Christmas season and the New Year season - all Members have been able to take it. May I, on behalf of the staff and myself, wish all Members a very Happy Christmas and a very prosperous New Year.
I have, I think Members will not disagree with me, directed the Clerk of the Legislative Assembly to close this Assembly tomorrow and give the staff a holiday for the whole of tomorrow.
Some hon. Members: Hear, hear!
